And, Morrissey and Johnny Marr are still going strong in their separate careers and keep picking up new fans

@Schumitastic I'm sure there are other bands, because I've listened to modern artists that seem like they've gotten some of their style from The Cure, like Bloc Party, She Wants Revenge and The Horrors. Not all of The Smiths music is political but Meat is Murder and How Soon is Now are. And you may not be wrong about The Smiths being more influential but Robert Smith has come up with a lot of beautiful music that has more meaning to me personally. I got defensive about them being belittled.

@Schumitastic That's bullshit, Oasis mainly claims The Beatles as inspiration. And The Cure has inspired many bands, like Interpol for example. And I still hear them referred to a lot now. I like The Smiths but I am a bigger fan of The Cure and if the Smiths have made more "impact" it is because they had songs that were heavily laced with political motivations. Robert Smith never tried to be anything like that. They have similarities but aren't really THAT similar.

I think the whole The Smiths v The Cure argument is rather irrelevant these days due to the influence The Smiths have had on modern day music. A whole host of bands and artists emerged like Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, Coldplay, The Verve, etc (and that's just the Brit pop ones) have cited The Smiths as one of their major influences, whereas The Cure don't get a word in edgeways these days. And, Morrissey and Johnny Marr are still going strong in their separate careers and keep picking up new fans
